Sitemap.xml Generator: limits and things worth knowing

A single sitemap file may contain at most 50,000 URLs and must not exceed 50 MB uncompressed. Beyond that you need a sitemap index pointing at several files.
Google ignores the priority element entirely and treats changefreq as a hint at best. Only loc and lastmod carry real weight, and lastmod only when it is honest — a file that claims every page changed today gets the field discounted.
List only canonical, indexable URLs that return 200. Including redirects, noindex pages or 404s wastes crawl budget and reduces trust in the file.
Reference the sitemap from robots.txt and submit it in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools; neither happens automatically.
