Frequently asked questions

What is an invisible character?

A Unicode code point that occupies a position in text but renders as nothing visible — most commonly U+200B zero-width space, U+200D zero-width joiner, U+2800 braille pattern blank and U+3164 Hangul filler. They are used to make apparently blank usernames, captions and messages.

Which invisible character works where?

It varies by platform, because each one strips a different set. U+3164 Hangul filler and U+2800 braille blank survive the most form validators, while a plain zero-width space is often trimmed as whitespace. Copy and test before relying on one.

Why does my blank name get rejected?

Many platforms now normalise Unicode and reject names that contain no visible glyph, precisely to stop impersonation and moderation evasion. If one character is rejected, another may pass — but the rules change often and without notice.

Can invisible characters break my text?

Yes, and it is a real hazard when they arrive by accident. A zero-width space pasted into source code produces a syntax error pointing at a line that looks perfectly correct, and one inside a password or URL causes a mismatch with no visible cause.
