Color Histogram: limits and things worth knowing

  • Values stacked hard against the left or right edge indicate clipping — detail that is pure black or pure white and cannot be recovered by editing.
  • There is no correct histogram shape. A deliberately dark or bright image produces a skewed histogram and is not wrong.
  • A colour cast shows as the three channels being offset from one another rather than aligned.
  • The luminance histogram weights the channels by perceived brightness, which is why it differs from the average of the three RGB histograms.
