• Relative luminance, the value WCAG uses, applies gamma correction before weighting. A quick approximation for choosing text colour is the YIQ formula, but only the full luminance calculation gives a compliant contrast ratio.
• The common shortcut of switching to black text above 50% luminance is approximate and can produce failing contrast — check the actual ratio with the contrast checker.
