- Setting up theme tokens for light and dark modes.
CSS Variables Generator: limits and things worth knowing
- CSS custom properties are resolved at runtime and inherit through the cascade, which is what makes theme switching possible without recompiling. SCSS and LESS variables are compile-time and cannot be changed by a class toggle.
- Define tokens on :root and override them under a theme selector. Defining a colour only inside a media query or a theme block means it has no value in the default state — the classic cause of an unreadable page.
- Name tokens by role rather than by appearance. --color-surface survives a rebrand; --color-light-blue does not.
- Custom properties can be read and modified from JavaScript, unlike preprocessor variables.
Is it private and secure?
Your privacy is built in. CSS Variables Generator runs completely on your device, so whatever you enter stays in your browser and is never transmitted, logged or stored on any server.
Network activity: none. Nothing is sent and nothing is fetched. This tool makes no network request at all once the page has loaded — which is why it keeps working if your connection drops.
You do not have to take that on trust — our privacy proof page publishes the Content-Security-Policy that enforces it, lists every third party it permits, and shows how to verify the whole claim yourself.
