• CSS defines 148 named colours, inherited from the original X11 palette. The names are inconsistent by modern standards — there are several near-duplicate greys and the greens are unevenly spread.
• Nearest-name matching depends on the distance metric. Euclidean distance in RGB gives different answers from perceptual distance in LAB, and the perceptual one usually matches intuition better.
• Both grey and gray are valid in CSS, along with their compounds.
• A nearest name is an approximation, not an equivalent. Use the hex value for anything where the exact colour matters.
