Replacement works on colour similarity within a tolerance, so it suits flat graphics far better than photographs, where a single visual colour spans thousands of distinct values.
Anti-aliased edges are partly blended with the background, so a fringe of the old colour usually remains after removing a background. Raising the tolerance removes the fringe and starts eating the subject.
JPEG compression introduces colour noise around edges, which is why replacement works noticeably better on PNG sources.
