• Optimiser hints live inside comments in several databases — Oracle's /*+ ... */ and MySQL's /*! ... */ among them. Stripping comments removes them and can silently change the query plan.
• String literals are preserved exactly, including whitespace inside them, because that whitespace is data rather than formatting.
