What is Base58 used for?
Base58 encodes binary data as text using 58 characters. It is best known from Bitcoin addresses, IPFS content identifiers and Flickr short URLs — anywhere a value has to survive being written down, read aloud or double-clicked.
How is Base58 different from Base64?
Base58 removes the four characters that cause human and software trouble: 0 (zero), O (capital o), I (capital i) and l (lowercase L), plus the + and / that Base64 uses and that break URL and double-click selection. It is about 5% less compact as a result.
What is Base58Check?
Base58Check adds a version byte and a 4-byte checksum before encoding, so a mistyped Bitcoin address fails validation instead of silently sending funds to a nonexistent one. Plain Base58 has no such protection.
Why is Base58 not padded?
Base64 pads with = to reach a multiple of four characters. Base58 has no padding at all, so leading zero bytes are instead encoded as leading '1' characters — which is why Bitcoin addresses so often start with a 1.
