Frequently asked questions

What is Base85 and when is it worth using?

Base85 encodes four bytes as five printable characters, giving about 25% size overhead compared with Base64's 33%. It is used inside PDF files (ASCII85 filters), in PostScript, and in ZeroMQ's Z85 variant for binary data in config files.

What is the difference between ASCII85 and Z85?

Different alphabets for different hazards. ASCII85 uses characters including quotes and backslashes that need escaping in source code and JSON; Z85 was designed specifically to avoid those, so a Z85 string can be embedded in code without escaping.

Why is Base85 not used on the web?

Its alphabet includes characters that are unsafe in URLs, HTML and JSON without escaping — which usually cancels out the size saving. Base64 remains the safer default for anything travelling over HTTP.

What does the 'z' shortcut mean in ASCII85?

Four consecutive zero bytes are encoded as the single character z instead of five characters. It makes ASCII85 noticeably more compact on data containing runs of zeros, which is common in the image streams inside PDFs.
