UTF-8 Converter: limits and things worth knowing

  • UTF-8 uses one to four bytes per character. ASCII is one byte, most Latin accents and Greek and Cyrillic are two, most CJK is three, and emoji are four — which is why a 10-character string can be 40 bytes.
  • Database column limits are usually in bytes, not characters. This is why MySQL's utf8mb4 needs four bytes per character and why an emoji can overflow a column that looked large enough.
  • The UTF-8 BOM (EF BB BF) is legal but discouraged. It is a frequent cause of an unexpected character at the start of a parsed file.
  • Mojibake almost always means UTF-8 bytes were decoded as Latin-1: the giveaway is the à sequence appearing before accented letters.
