Escape JSON String: limits and things worth knowing

• JSON has no single-quoted strings. Only double quotes are valid, which is why apostrophes need no escaping but quotation marks always do.
• Literal newlines are illegal inside a JSON string and must become \n. A pasted multi-line block is the most common cause of "Unexpected token in JSON".
• Control characters below U+0020 must be escaped, usually as \u00XX. These are invisible on screen and are a frequent source of a payload that looks correct and will not parse.
• The forward slash may be escaped as \/ but does not have to be. Some encoders do it to avoid closing a <\/script> tag early inside inline HTML.
