What people use Escape JavaScript String for

  • Placing arbitrary text into a JavaScript or TypeScript string literal in source code.
  • Building a script string that contains quotes, backslashes or line breaks.
  • Escaping a regex pattern or a Windows file path before assigning it to a variable.

Escape JavaScript String: limits and things worth knowing

  • A backtick and the ${ sequence both need escaping in template literals but not in ordinary quoted strings — the escaping you need depends on which quote style the code uses.
  • Windows paths are the classic failure: C:\new\table contains \n and \t, so it silently becomes a newline and a tab unless every backslash is doubled.
  • \x41 and \u0041 both produce 'A'. Characters above U+FFFF need the \u{1F600} form with braces, which requires the string to be in a Unicode-aware context.
  • Escaping is not sanitisation. A correctly escaped string is still dangerous if it ends up inside eval() or innerHTML.

Is it private and secure?

Your privacy is built in. Escape JavaScript String runs completely on your device, so whatever you enter stays in your browser and is never transmitted, logged or stored on any server.

Network activity: none. Nothing is sent and nothing is fetched. This tool makes no network request at all once the page has loaded — which is why it keeps working if your connection drops.

You do not have to take that on trust — our privacy proof page publishes the Content-Security-Policy that enforces it, lists every third party it permits, and shows how to verify the whole claim yourself.
