Stair Calculator: limits and things worth knowing

  • Total rise is measured floor surface to floor surface, not floor to ceiling — the most common source of a wrong answer.
  • Every riser in a flight must be within a few millimetres of every other. An uneven riser, especially the first or last, is the classic trip hazard and a routine inspection failure.
  • Typical domestic limits are a maximum rise around 190-200 mm and a minimum going around 220-250 mm, but the exact figures are set by your local building code and differ between the UK, US and EU. Check the applicable code before cutting.
  • The rule of thumb that rise times going should fall near 45,000 mm² (or 2 × rise + going ≈ 630 mm) produces comfortable stairs and is worth checking your result against.

How do I calculate stair rise and run?

Enter your total floor-to-floor height and the calculator divides it into equal risers, then works out the run (tread depth) and the number of steps. Rise is the vertical height of each step; run is the horizontal depth.

What is a comfortable rise and run?

A common guideline is a riser around 7 inches (178 mm) and a tread run around 11 inches (280 mm) — the “7-11” rule. Exact limits are set by your local building code, so always check the rules for your area before building.

How do I work out the stringer length?

The stringer is the diagonal board that carries the steps. Its length is the hypotenuse of the total rise and total run: √(rise² + run²). The calculator computes it for you once you enter your measurements.

How many steps will my staircase need?

Divide the total height by your target riser height and round to a whole number, then recalculate the exact riser so every step is equal. The calculator does this automatically as you type.
