- Mix ratios are by volume: 1:2:4 is one part cement, two sand, four aggregate, a common general-purpose concrete of around 20 MPa.
- Dry volume exceeds wet volume by roughly 50-55% because the materials compact and voids fill, so ordering by finished volume alone leaves you short.
- Water-cement ratio governs strength far more than cement quantity. Adding water to improve workability weakens the result significantly.
- Mortar uses different ratios from concrete — typically 1:4 to 1:6 cement to sand depending on the application.
