How do I convert MPG to litres per 100 km?
They are inversely related, so it is not a simple multiplication: L/100km = 235.215 divided by US MPG, or 282.481 divided by imperial MPG. Higher MPG is better; lower L/100km is better.
Why are US and UK MPG figures different?
Because the gallons differ. A US gallon is 3.785 litres, an imperial gallon is 4.546 — so the same car rates about 20% higher in imperial MPG than in US MPG. Comparing a UK review figure with a US one without converting is a common error.
Which measure is better for comparing cars?
L/100km, because it is linear in fuel consumed. Improving from 10 to 9 L/100km saves the same fuel per distance as 9 to 8, whereas the MPG scale compresses at the top — going from 40 to 50 MPG saves far more fuel than 50 to 60 does.
How do electric vehicles compare?
They are rated in kWh per 100 km or in MPGe, which converts electricity to a gasoline-equivalent energy content of 33.7 kWh per gallon. MPGe is useful for rough comparison but says nothing about running cost, since electricity and fuel are priced completely differently.
