Which power units can I convert between?
Watts, kilowatts, megawatts, horsepower, BTU per hour, calories per second and foot-pounds per second, in any direction.
How many watts is one horsepower?
It depends which horsepower. Mechanical (imperial) horsepower is 745.70 watts; metric horsepower, used across much of Europe and often written PS or CV, is 735.50 watts. The 1.4% difference is why the same car is quoted with slightly different figures in different markets.
What is the difference between kW and kWh?
Kilowatts measure rate, kilowatt-hours measure quantity. A 2 kW heater running for three hours consumes 6 kWh. Your electricity bill charges for kWh; the appliance rating is in kW.
How do BTU ratings relate to watts?
One BTU per hour is about 0.293 watts, so a 12,000 BTU/h air conditioner is roughly 3.5 kW of cooling capacity. Note that this is the heat moved, not the electricity drawn — those differ by the unit's efficiency.
