URL Encoder / Decoder: limits and things worth knowing
- There are two different functions and choosing wrongly is the usual bug: encodeURIComponent escapes & = ? and # and is correct for a single parameter VALUE, while encodeURI leaves them intact because it is meant for a whole URL.
- A space becomes %20 in a path and may be + in a form-encoded query string. A literal plus must always be %2B, and confusing the two corrupts signatures and Base64 values.
- Non-ASCII characters are encoded as their UTF-8 bytes, so a single accented letter becomes two percent-escapes and an emoji becomes four.
- Double-encoding — encoding an already-encoded string — turns % into %25 and produces the literal escape sequences appearing in the final URL.
Is it private and secure?
Your privacy is built in. URL Encoder / Decoder runs completely on your device, so whatever you enter stays in your browser and is never transmitted, logged or stored on any server.
Network activity: none. Nothing is sent and nothing is fetched. This tool makes no network request at all once the page has loaded — which is why it keeps working if your connection drops.
You do not have to take that on trust — our privacy proof page publishes the Content-Security-Policy that enforces it, lists every third party it permits, and shows how to verify the whole claim yourself.
