PDF Size Analyzer: limits and things worth knowing

• Per-page sizes point straight at the cause. A single 8 MB page in a 10 MB document is almost always one high-resolution scanned or pasted image.
• Shared resources such as embedded fonts are counted at the document level rather than per page, so page sizes will not add up exactly to the file size.
• A document that is large despite having few images usually has embedded font subsets or accumulated incremental-save history — Optimize PDF addresses both losslessly.
• Scanned pages are almost always the cause of an oversized PDF. A page of text stored as an image can be fifty times the size of the same page stored as text.
• Embedded fonts are counted once for the document, not once per page, so a file with many fonts shows a large fixed overhead that no amount of page removal will reduce.
• The figures are byte contributions per page as stored in the file, which is why they will not add up exactly to the file size — shared resources, the cross-reference table and document-level metadata sit outside any single page.
• A page that is large because of one high-resolution photograph responds well to compression. A page that is large because it is a 600 dpi scan of text responds better to OCR and re-rendering.
• Knowing which pages are heavy is usually more useful than compressing blindly: removing or replacing two scanned pages often beats degrading the quality of the whole document.
