What is a document outline?
The hierarchy of headings — H1 through H6 — that gives a page its structure. Screen readers use it to navigate, and search engines use it to work out which passage answers which question, so a broken outline costs both accessibility and ranking.
What makes an outline invalid?
Skipping levels (an H2 followed directly by an H4), using more than one H1, or choosing a heading level for its font size rather than its place in the hierarchy. Each break means assistive technology announces a structure that does not match what a sighted reader sees.
How many H1s should a page have?
One. HTML5's outline algorithm was never implemented by any browser and was removed from the spec, so in practice a single H1 describing the page remains the reliable choice.
Does heading structure affect SEO?
Indirectly but meaningfully. Headings are how search engines and AI systems split a page into passages, and passage-level matching is now a major part of how results are chosen. A flat page of paragraphs offers nothing to extract.
