Merge PDF and Word: limits and things worth knowing
- PDF output is lossless for both input types. Word documents are rendered to pages and PDF pages are copied across untouched, so nothing is retyped, re-flowed or approximated.
- Word output is lossless for .docx inputs and lossy for PDFs. A PDF stores positioned glyphs rather than paragraphs, so its text can be recovered but its layout, images, tables and columns cannot. There is no tool anywhere that converts an arbitrary PDF to Word faithfully, and one that claims to is reflowing your document.
- A scanned PDF has no text layer at all, so merging it into a Word document yields nothing from those pages. The tool detects this and names the file rather than silently contributing blank paragraphs. Run PDF OCR first, or choose PDF output to keep the scan as an image.
- Password-protected PDFs cannot have their pages copied. Remove the password with Unlock PDF first — that requires the password you already use to open the file, which no tool can recover if you have lost it.
- In Word output the first file in the list decides the page size, margins, headers and footers for the whole document, because those belong to a section rather than to text. Put the file whose layout you want at the top.
- Legacy .doc files are not supported. Open one in Word and save it as .docx, or in Google Docs use File then Download then Microsoft Word (.docx).
- There is no upload limit because there is no upload. The real ceiling is the memory your browser tab can allocate, since the whole job runs on your device — large scanned PDFs are what usually reaches it.
- To join files of a single type, the dedicated tools are lighter: Merge PDF for PDFs only, Merge Word Documents for .docx only. This tool exists for the mixed case they cannot handle.

What happens to a PDF when I merge into a Word document?
Only its text survives. A PDF stores positioned glyphs rather than paragraphs, so there is no faithful way to rebuild it as an editable document: images, tables, columns and exact layout are lost, and a scanned PDF with no text layer produces nothing at all. The tool names any file this affects before you merge and again in the result.
Does the order of the files matter?

Can I merge a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. An encrypted PDF cannot have its pages copied until the password is removed, so the tool will tell you which file is protected. Remove the password with Unlock PDF first — you will need the password you already use to open it — then add the unlocked copy here.
