The count is read from the PDF's own internal page tree, so it is exact rather than estimated, and it works on files that will not render a preview thumbnail.

The number reported is the physical page count. A document whose pages are printed two-up will show the sheet count, not the logical page count.

Why does my page count differ from the printed page count?

A PDF page is a sheet in the file, not a numbered page in the document. Cover pages, blank inserts and roman-numbered front matter all count as pages here, so a document printed as "page 1 of 20" may well be a 24-page PDF.

No. The PDF is parsed in the page itself, which is why the count is instant even for a 500-page file — there is no upload to wait for and no copy of your document on any server.
