What people use PDF Page Counter for

  • Checking a submission against a page limit before sending coursework, a grant application or a legal filing.
  • Counting pages across a batch of PDFs at once to estimate printing cost.
  • Verifying that a scan captured every page of a contract before you file it.

PDF Page Counter: limits and things worth knowing

  • The count is read from the PDF's own internal page tree, so it is exact rather than estimated, and it works on files that will not render a preview thumbnail.
  • Multiple files can be counted in one go, each listed individually with a combined total.
  • The number reported is the physical page count. A document whose pages are printed two-up will show the sheet count, not the logical page count.

Is it private and secure?

Your privacy is built in. PDF Page Counter does all processing on your own device using client-side code, so your files are never transmitted, stored or seen by anyone — including us.

Network activity: none. Nothing is sent and nothing is fetched. This tool makes no network request at all once the page has loaded — which is why it keeps working if your connection drops.

You do not have to take that on trust — our privacy proof page publishes the Content-Security-Policy that enforces it, lists every third party it permits, and shows how to verify the whole claim yourself.

We also measured the competition. Our PDF upload audit recorded how many bytes each of 20 online PDF tools actually transmits: 12 of the 13 measurable services uploaded the whole test file, and Filevane transmitted 0.00 MB.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count the pages in a PDF?

Drop the PDF into the tool and the page count appears immediately. The file is read by your own browser using its embedded page tree, so the number is exact rather than estimated — and it works even on PDFs that will not open a preview thumbnail.

Can I count pages across multiple PDF files at once?

Yes. Add as many PDFs as you like and each file is listed with its own page count plus a combined total. This is the fastest way to check a batch before merging, printing or submitting them against a page limit.

Does it work on password-protected PDFs?

A PDF with an owner password (restricting printing or copying) usually still reports its page count. A PDF encrypted with a user password cannot be opened at all until the password is supplied — remove it first with the Unlock PDF tool if you know it.

Why does my page count differ from the printed page count?

A PDF page is a sheet in the file, not a numbered page in the document. Cover pages, blank inserts and roman-numbered front matter all count as pages here, so a document printed as "page 1 of 20" may well be a 24-page PDF.

Is the file uploaded to count its pages?

No. The PDF is parsed in the page itself, which is why the count is instant even for a 500-page file — there is no upload to wait for and no copy of your document on any server.
