JSON to CSV: limits and things worth knowing
- CSV is flat and JSON is not. Nested objects have to be flattened into dotted column names, and arrays of varying length do not map cleanly onto fixed columns at all.
- The column set is taken from the keys present. Records that omit a key produce empty cells rather than an error, so a ragged source silently becomes a sparse table.
- Values containing commas, quotes or newlines are quoted and escaped automatically — the output is meant to survive a round trip, not just to look right.
- Excel interprets long digit strings as numbers and will mangle IDs and phone numbers. Import as text rather than double-clicking the file.
