Frequently asked questions
Why sort JSON keys?
To make diffs meaningful. JSON object key order is arbitrary, so two semantically identical files can produce a huge diff purely from reordering. Sorting both first makes a version-control diff show only the changes that actually matter.
Does sorting change what the JSON means?
No. The JSON specification defines objects as unordered collections of name/value pairs, so reordering keys preserves meaning exactly. Arrays are different — their order is significant and must never be sorted blindly.
Is sorted JSON the same as canonical JSON?
Not quite. Canonical forms such as JCS (RFC 8785) also fix number formatting, string escaping and whitespace, which matters when a hash or signature is computed over the result. Key sorting alone is not sufficient for that.
Will sorting break my config file?
Rarely, but check first. Some tools do read object order — certain OpenAPI generators and CI configs among them — and JSON has no comments, so a file with comments is really JSON5 or JSONC and may not survive a strict round-trip.
