What Your Photos Reveal About You (And How to Strip It)
Most photos taken on a phone contain the exact GPS coordinates of where they were taken, the date and time to the second, and the make, model and often the serial number of the camera. This is EXIF data, it travels with the file, and it is readable by anyone who receives it β with a right-click, not a hack.
Whether that matters depends on where the photo goes. This guide covers what is actually stored, which platforms strip it and which do not, and how to remove it without touching the image.
What is EXIF data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a block of metadata that cameras write into the image file alongside the pixels. It was designed for photographers β recording shutter speed and aperture so you could learn from your own shots β and it has grown considerably since.
A typical smartphone photo carries:
- GPS latitude and longitude, often accurate to a few metres, plus altitude
- Date and time of capture, to the second
- Camera make and model, and frequently the body serial number
- Lens data, exposure settings, ISO, whether the flash fired
- Orientation, software version, and sometimes the owner or artist name configured on the device
None of this is visible in the picture. All of it is in the file.
Do my photos really contain my location?
If location services were enabled for the camera, yes β and the accuracy is street-level, not city-level. On iPhone this is Settings β Privacy & Security β Location Services β Camera. On Android it is a toggle in the camera app's own settings, usually called "Location tags" or "Save location".
The risk is not abstract. A photo posted from home, or of an item for sale, or of a pet in the garden, carries the coordinates of the place it was taken. People have been located from a single image more times than is comfortable β and the person doing it needs no special tools, only the file.
Screenshots are different. They generally carry no GPS, because there was no camera involved. They do still carry device and software information.
Which platforms strip EXIF and which do not?
Major social networks strip most EXIF on upload. Messaging apps, email and direct file transfers usually do not. This is the detail that catches people out, because the intuition is backwards β the "public" channel is the safe one.

The practical takeaway: the leak happens when you send someone the actual file. Posting to Instagram is comparatively safe; emailing the same photo to a stranger is not.
Note also that stripping on upload protects the recipient's view, not the platform's copy. The service received the original.
How do I remove EXIF data from a photo?
Use Remove EXIF: add the image, download the cleaned copy. The metadata block is removed and the pixels are untouched, so there is no quality loss and no re-encoding.

Your photos are processed inside your browser and never uploaded β which matters here more than almost anywhere else on this site, since the whole point is that you did not want this image leaving your control.
Check the result by right-clicking the cleaned file, opening Properties (Windows) or Get Info (macOS), and looking for the location and camera fields. They should be gone.
Does removing EXIF change the image?
No. The metadata is a separate block in the file, and removing it does not touch a single pixel. There is no re-compression and no visible difference β the file simply gets slightly smaller.
This is worth stating clearly because it is the opposite of what happens when you convert or compress an image, where quality genuinely is at stake. Stripping metadata is free.
One consequence to be aware of: orientation is stored in EXIF. A photo taken sideways relies on the orientation tag to display upright. A good stripping tool applies the rotation before removing the tag, so the image stays the right way up. If you use a crude tool and your photos come out rotated, that is why.
What EXIF removal does not do
Removing metadata does not remove anything visible in the picture. This is the most consequential misunderstanding on this topic.
If the photograph itself shows a house number, a street sign, a name badge, a reflection in a window, or a screen with information on it, stripping EXIF does nothing about any of it. The coordinates are gone; the visual evidence is not.
For that you need to alter the pixels. Blur Image and Pixelate Image both do this locally. Two cautions:
- Pixelation is not always irreversible. Light pixelation of known-format text β a licence plate, a card number β has been reversed. Use heavy blur, or cover the area with a solid block, for anything genuinely sensitive.
- Check the result on the exported file, not the preview.
What about PDFs and other documents?
PDFs carry their own metadata and it leaks just as readily. Author name, the software that produced the file, and creation and modification timestamps are all standard β and the author field is very often a real person's name pulled from the operating system account.

Office documents behave similarly, and often additionally carry revision history and comments.
When should I strip EXIF?
A short, practical list:
- Before posting a photo anywhere public β especially one taken at home.
- Before selling something online. Marketplace photos taken at your address are a well-documented risk.
- Before sending photos to someone you do not know, including landlords, buyers and recruiters.
- Before publishing images on a website, where they can be downloaded in full.
- Before submitting photos as evidence or documentation, where an inconsistent timestamp can cause problems you did not anticipate.
You do not need to strip metadata from photos you are keeping, sharing with family, or backing up. EXIF is genuinely useful β it is how your photo library sorts by date and place. The rule is to strip on the way out, not at capture.
