Repair PDF: limits and things worth knowing

Repair works by rebuilding the cross-reference table — the index that tells a reader where each object lives. A surprising number of unreadable PDFs have intact content and only a broken index.
Content genuinely missing from the file cannot be recovered. If a download stopped halfway, the later pages do not exist in the bytes you have and nothing can restore them.
Encrypted files must be unlocked before they can be rebuilt.
Always keep the original. Repair produces a new file and a rebuild is occasionally worse than the damaged original for a partially readable document.
