• Pages are rendered rather than extracted, so the output is a picture of the page — text stops being selectable and becomes pixels.
• PNG is lossless and handles text and line art crisply, which makes it the right choice for documents. JPG produces visible artefacts around lettering.
• Choose the resolution deliberately. 150 DPI is fine on screen; printing needs 300 DPI, and the file size scales roughly with the square of the resolution.
• To pull out the images that are already embedded in the PDF at their original quality, use Extract Images instead — that gets the source files rather than a re-render.
