Frequently asked questions

How are ISO week numbers calculated?

Under ISO 8601, weeks start on Monday and week 1 is the week containing the first Thursday of the year — equivalently, the week containing 4 January. That is why 1 January can fall in week 52 or 53 of the previous year.

Why does my week number differ from another calendar?

Because not everyone uses ISO 8601. The common US convention starts weeks on Sunday and counts the week containing 1 January as week 1, which frequently gives a number one higher than the ISO value. European business and most of ISO-following industry use the Monday/Thursday rule.

How many weeks are in a year?

52 in most years and 53 in some. A year has 53 ISO weeks when it starts on a Thursday, or on a Wednesday in a leap year — which works out to roughly every five to six years.

What is week 53 used for?

It is a real ISO week, and it routinely breaks payroll, reporting and scheduling systems that assume 52. If you build anything on week numbers, test it against a 53-week year explicitly.
