Time Duration Calculator: limits and things worth knowing

  • A shift that crosses midnight is handled correctly — 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours, not a negative number.
  • Results are shown in hours and minutes and as a decimal, because payroll systems almost always want the decimal form (7 h 30 m is 7.5, not 7.30).
  • Daylight saving transitions make one day 23 hours and another 25. A duration spanning a clock change is not the difference between the two wall-clock readings.
  • Unpaid breaks are not deducted automatically — subtract them yourself before invoicing.

Is it private and secure?

Your privacy is built in. Time Duration Calculator runs completely on your device, so whatever you enter stays in your browser and is never transmitted, logged or stored on any server.

Network activity: none. Nothing is sent and nothing is fetched. This tool makes no network request at all once the page has loaded — which is why it keeps working if your connection drops.

You do not have to take that on trust — our privacy proof page publishes the Content-Security-Policy that enforces it, lists every third party it permits, and shows how to verify the whole claim yourself.

Why Browser-Based Tools Are Safer for Your Files Most online converters upload your files to a server. Client-side tools don't. Here's why that difference matters for privacy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the duration between two times?

Enter a start and an end time and the result appears in hours and minutes, plus total minutes and decimal hours. Decimal hours are the format most timesheets and invoicing systems expect — 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5, not 7.3.

How do I handle a shift that crosses midnight?

Enter the times as they occur and the calculator detects the rollover, so 22:00 to 06:00 correctly returns 8 hours rather than a negative result. Overnight shifts are where manual subtraction most often goes wrong.

Can I subtract an unpaid break?

Yes — enter the break in minutes and it is deducted from the total, which is what you need for payroll. A 9-to-5 with a 30-minute unpaid lunch is 7.5 payable hours, not 8.

Does it account for daylight saving changes?

It calculates the literal clock difference between the two times you enter. On a DST changeover day the real elapsed time differs by an hour, so check the date if you are timing a shift across the spring or autumn transition.
