Profit Margin Calculator: limits and things worth knowing

  • Margin and markup are not the same and confusing them is the classic pricing error. Margin is profit ÷ price; markup is profit ÷ cost. An item costing £60 sold at £100 has a 40% margin and a 66.7% markup.
  • Gross margin excludes overheads; net margin includes them. A healthy gross margin can still mean a loss-making business.
  • To hit a target margin, price = cost ÷ (1 − margin). For 40% on a £60 cost that is £100 — not £60 × 1.4, which gives £84 and a 28.6% margin.
  • A 10% discount off price costs far more than 10% of profit: on that £100 item, it removes a quarter of the £40 margin.

Is it private and secure?

Your privacy is built in. Profit Margin Calculator runs completely on your device, so whatever you enter stays in your browser and is never transmitted, logged or stored on any server.

Network activity: none. Nothing is sent and nothing is fetched. This tool makes no network request at all once the page has loaded — which is why it keeps working if your connection drops.

You do not have to take that on trust — our privacy proof page publishes the Content-Security-Policy that enforces it, lists every third party it permits, and shows how to verify the whole claim yourself.
