- Addition and subtraction need a common denominator; multiplication and division do not. This asymmetry is the source of most fraction errors.
- Dividing by a fraction means multiplying by its reciprocal: ÷ 2/3 is the same as × 3/2.
- Simplification divides both parts by their greatest common divisor, so 18/24 reduces to 3/4.
- Not every fraction has a terminating decimal. A denominator with prime factors other than 2 and 5 repeats — 1/3 and 1/7 never terminate.
