Log Calculator: limits and things worth knowing

  • A logarithm answers 'what power gives this number': log₁₀(1000) = 3 because 10³ = 1000.
  • The change of base formula is log_b(x) = ln(x) ÷ ln(b), which is how any base is computed from natural logs.
  • Logs of zero and of negative numbers are undefined in the reals; log(x) tends to negative infinity as x approaches zero.
  • Notation is inconsistent across fields: 'log' means base 10 in most engineering, base e in much mathematics, and base 2 in computer science. Check the context.
