  • Getting a quick population-level weight category.
  • Tracking a broad trend in body weight relative to height over time.
  • Providing a starting figure a clinician has asked for.

BMI Calculator: limits and things worth knowing

  • BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. It was devised in the 1830s as a population statistic and was never designed to assess an individual.
  • It cannot distinguish muscle from fat. Athletes and heavily muscled people routinely register as overweight or obese while carrying very little body fat.
  • It also ignores fat distribution, which is the part that matters most for cardiovascular risk. Waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio are better individual indicators.
  • Standard thresholds were derived from European populations, and several health bodies use lower cut-offs for South Asian and East Asian populations because risk rises at a lower BMI.
  • This is a general information tool and not medical advice. Discuss any health concern with a clinician.

Is it private and secure?

Your privacy is built in. BMI Calculator runs completely on your device, so whatever you enter stays in your browser and is never transmitted, logged or stored on any server.

Network activity: none. Nothing is sent and nothing is fetched. This tool makes no network request at all once the page has loaded — which is why it keeps working if your connection drops.

You do not have to take that on trust — our privacy proof page publishes the Content-Security-Policy that enforces it, lists every third party it permits, and shows how to verify the whole claim yourself.
