Regex Explainer: limits and things worth knowing
- Each token is described in sequence, which makes it obvious when a quantifier applies to a single character rather than to the group you assumed.
- Capturing groups are numbered by the position of their opening bracket, left to right. Nested groups are numbered by their opening bracket too, which is why the numbering often surprises people.
- (?: ) is a non-capturing group — the same grouping without consuming a capture number. Converting unused groups to non-capturing makes back-references stable.
- Explanation is not evaluation: a pattern can be described perfectly and still perform terribly on a hostile input.
