Frequently asked questions
Can OCR read handwriting?
Only to a point, and expectations should be set accordingly. Standard OCR engines including Tesseract are trained on printed type, so neat block capitals may transcribe reasonably while ordinary cursive often will not. Accuracy varies enormously with handwriting style.
How can I improve handwriting recognition accuracy?
Photograph flat and square-on in even light, avoiding shadow across the page. Crop to just the text, increase contrast, and use the highest resolution available — around 300 DPI equivalent. Lined or squared paper with well-separated letters recognises far better than dense cursive on plain paper.
Why is my handwritten text coming out as nonsense?
Usually connected letterforms. Cursive gives the engine no reliable character boundaries, so it segments in the wrong places and produces plausible-looking but wrong words. Printed, separated characters are dramatically more reliable.
Is my image uploaded for recognition?
No. Tesseract runs as WebAssembly in your browser, so handwritten notes, letters and forms are processed on your own device — which matters given how often handwritten documents are personal ones. Only the language model itself is downloaded.
