Which colour formats can I convert between?
HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV/HSB, CMYK and named CSS colours, in any direction. Modern CSS spaces such as OKLCH are increasingly useful for gradients and palettes because they interpolate perceptually rather than numerically.
Why do my RGB and CMYK colours not match?
Because they are different gamuts, not different notations. RGB is additive light and CMYK is subtractive ink, and many vivid RGB colours — bright greens and oranges especially — simply cannot be printed. Any conversion is an approximation, and accurate print work needs a colour-managed profile.
What is the difference between HSL and HSV?
Both use hue and saturation but differ in the third component. In HSL, 50% lightness is the pure hue and 100% is white; in HSV, 100% value is the pure hue and there is no white without reducing saturation. HSL is generally easier for generating tints and shades.
Does converting between formats lose accuracy?
Between HEX, RGB, HSL and HSV the round-trip is lossless apart from rounding, since they describe the same sRGB space. Conversions to CMYK or to a wider space are genuinely lossy because the gamuts differ.
