Audio Converter: limits and things worth knowing

  • MP3, AAC and OGG are lossy: every re-encode discards more detail, and converting MP3 to MP3 at a higher bitrate cannot recover what the first encode threw away.
  • WAV and FLAC are lossless. FLAC is roughly half the size of the equivalent WAV with identical audio, which makes it the better archive format.
  • Bitrate is the quality control that matters for lossy formats. 192 kbps is transparent for most listening, 320 kbps is the practical ceiling for MP3, and anything below 128 kbps is audible on music.
  • Converting from a lossy source to a lossless format produces a large file that sounds exactly like the lossy original. It is useful for editing, not for quality.
  • There is no upload limit because there is no upload. Server-side converters cap free file sizes because bandwidth and storage cost them money; this tool never sends the file anywhere, so no quota applies to it.
  • The real constraint is your device's memory, not a plan tier. FFmpeg runs here as WebAssembly inside the browser tab, and the whole file plus its output has to fit in the memory that tab is allowed — so a large file can fail on a phone and succeed on a laptop.
  • If a large file fails, the tab runs out of memory rather than silently producing a corrupt result. Closing other tabs, using a desktop browser, or trimming the file first are the practical fixes.
  • A 64-bit desktop browser with several gigabytes free handles files far larger than the typical free tier of a server-side converter. We deliberately do not publish a single maximum figure, because the honest answer depends on your device and stating one number would be wrong for most people.
  • Nothing is queued and nothing is rate-limited. Conversion speed depends on your processor, so a long video takes longer on a phone — but it starts immediately rather than waiting behind other users' jobs.

Does converting to WAV or FLAC lose quality?
