- Left-shifting by n multiplies by 2^n and right-shifting divides, which is why shifts appear in optimised arithmetic.
- Signed right shift preserves the sign bit while unsigned shift does not — JavaScript's >> and >>> differ for exactly this reason.
- Fixed-width arithmetic overflows silently by wrapping. Adding 1 to the maximum signed 32-bit integer gives the minimum negative one.
